Jess Interview #1
9/1/02: Here is the first interview with Jessica :)
Shi-Yu:First for the people that don't know who you are why don't you tell them who you are and what you do.
Jessica: I'm the Character Design Artist for WGU. The Creative Consultant, Alek T conceives of the characters for the fantasy roster and I "flesh out" his concepts and create sketches for the 3D artists to work from.
Shi-Yu: How did you hear about the WrestlingGamersUnited project?
Jessica: From Alek T, who happens to be my boyfriend and roommate. Dave the Wishmaster asked Alek if he wanted to help with this video game project, so for the first character designs Alek put together these vague pencil sketches on notebook paper. I insisted that Alek not send those to Dave and let me have a shot at translating his sketches instead. Dave was so happy with the results that he gave me a spot on the team. So, Alek T and I actually work together as a Character Design Team.
Shi-Yu: What interested you about this project?
Jessica: Well, I'm not really a wrestling fan, but I am a big video game fan. I've been majoring in graphic design and I have a strong background in costume design, so I have been trying to figure out what direction I want to go with that. Not too long before this project came around, I had been trying to figure out how one does artwork for the video game industry (without having to know how to program, which I have no acumen for). I've been a huge fan of Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Conkers Bad Fur Day, GTA and now Eternal Darkness and Kingdom Hearts. Have you played Kingdom Hearts? The artwork in the game is beautiful-then again, Square doesn't slouch with visuals. Anyway, this project represented a great opportunity to do something I enjoy and the outcome will be a cool new video game I can play!
Shi-Yu: What do you think about the project so far?
Jessica: I never ceased to be impressed with the great work the other guys on the team come out with. Dave couldn't be a better leader and he's amassed a great group of very weird and talented and dedicated people. I'm really proud to be able to work with this team. I'm really excited to see how it all turns out.
Shi-yu: What are you working on now?
Jessica: Just this and school and a sh*tty "it pays the bills" job I don't wish to speak of. It's difficult to balance everything and I wish I had more time to devote to the game. So, I've been playing the lottery a lot. If I win, I'll fund the game myself so Dave won't have to worry about investors and we can afford to get the game out faster!
Shi-Yu: I gotta ask is El Tirador hiding something in his tights?
Jessica: HA! Seriously, if I were a guy, all the females would have these huge Lara Croft-type breasts. But, being female my energies naturally gravitate elsewhere. You know, I've been nagging Alek T about having a "Crotch Adjuster" in CAW. I'm assuming we'll be able to adjust the size of the women's bosoms, so I insist on the ability to adjust the size of the men's crotches. I think we can get more of a female audience that way. A girl could buy a bottle of wine and sit with the game on Date Night, creating herself against some terrifying manner of hung Chippendale dancer. What else could a girl need?
Shi-Yu: So when this game gets bigger than Turner and more of a house hold name than Lucky Charms what are you going to do besides run over kids and famous people?
Jessica: Dump Alek T, buy a vibrator and spend all my time playing Pro-Wrestling X.
Shi-Yu: How Many People are you going to be making for This Project?
Jessica: Approximately three waves of 15 characters per wave. So, about 40-50 characters in all. So far I've given Dave 7 characters and I have a cool new luchador almost completed.
Shi-Yu: What is Your Favorite part of the job.
Jessica: Being able to put something in the world that hasn't been there before and have people be pleased by it. If what I'm doing will eventually give people another opportunity to smile and have fun, then I'll be very fulfilled.
Shi-Yu: Who is your favorite person to work with?
Jessica: Alek T, of course! If I say anyone else, he'll never take out the trash for me again.
Shi-Yu: well thank you for taking the time to do this interview.
